공력시뮬레이션&설계연구실, 대한민국 과학 기술 연구(RoKST&R) 프로그램 선정

서울대학교 공력시뮬레이션&설계연구실이 록히드마틴에서 주관한 대한민국 과학 기술 연구 (Republic of Korea Science, Technology and Research, RokST&R) 프로그램에 선정되었다. 이 프로그램은 항공, 우주, 신재생 에너지, 나노 기술 등 7개의 관심분야에 대해서 첨단기술을 개발 중인 국내 대학과 연구기관을 대상으로 하여 인재 육성을 통한 한국의 창조경제 개발을 지원하기 위해 마련되었다. 지난 4월 모집 공고했던 이 프로그램에 약 30개의 연구진이 지원하여 록히드마틴 소속 과학자 및 전문가들로 구성된 심사위원단의 검토를 거쳤으며, 지난 14일 3개의 팀을 선정하였다. 본 연구실에서는 "익형의 저레이놀즈수 유동 분석 및 설계" 프로젝트를 통해 장시간 고공 체류하는 고고도 플랫폼의 향상된 공기역학 성능 구현을 위해 저레이놀즈수(LRN)에서의 익형 설계 개선을 연구하게 되었다. 이 프로그램은 지도교수님이신 김종암 교수님과 본 연구실 대학원생들, 그리고 록히드마틴 엔지니어들이 함께 참여하여 앞으로 1년 간 공동으로 진행된다.

THREE SOUTH KOREAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT TEAMS AWARDED RESEARCH FUNDING, MENTORING FROM LOCKHEED MARTIN IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

 

SEOUL, Nov. 14, 2014 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] today announced the inaugural winners of its Republic of Korea Science, Technology and Research (RoKST&R) program, an open competition to support development of South Korea’s creative economy by nurturing students in the area of technological innovation.

 

Announced by the company in April, the competition was open to South Korean universities and research institutes developing advanced technology in any of seven different areas of interest, such as aeronautics, space, renewable energy and nanotechnology.

 

A panel of Lockheed Martin scientists and area specialists ran a multi-point selection review to evaluate each proposal for business relevance, uniqueness of the proposed research, scientific feasibility as well as proposal completeness.

 

“The launch of the RoKST&R fund will give science and engineering students in South Korea a jump start in their careers, and hopefully lead toward other potential joint research and development projects,” said Dr. Kyung Kim, Lockheed Martin RoKST&R program coordinator. “Lockheed Martin looks forward to co-developing new technologies with our Korean partners from the various universities, and to creating the technology solutions required by Korea.”

 

The three winning projects outlined below were selected from a field of 30 submissions during a weeklong series of “kick off” meetings in South Korea earlier this month. These one-year projects will be jointly conducted by professors, their selected graduate students and Lockheed Martin engineers.

 

RoKST&R is Lockheed Martin’s first industry-academia collaboration competition in Asia. A 2015 call for abstracts will be announced next April. Please refer to the RoKST&R website for additional information.

Seoul National University

Project Title: “Flow Analysis and Design of Low Reynolds Number Airfoil”

 

High altitude platforms that stay aloft for extended periods can be used to meet a variety of civil and commercial needs, including volcanic activity monitoring, forest fire detection, provision of telecommunication services and “pseudo” satellites. As the aerodynamic features of high altitude platforms are very different from conventional aircraft, this project will analyze Low Reynolds Number (LRN) flow characteristics—especially during transition to high altitude—to improve the design of an LRN airfoil to yield enhanced aerodynamic performance.
